Marriott Library Public Art Project
MARRIOTT LIBRARY at the UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
The Marriott Library, University of Utah, Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the Utah Arts Council Public Art Program announce a Call for Qualifications from artists or artist teams interested in creating site specific public art for the remodeled Marriott Library on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah
Founded in 1850, the University of Utah is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River, and is classified as a Research Intensive institution. The National Science Foundation ranks Utah with MIT and Stanford in the licensing of new technology. Consistently ranked in the top 35 for federally funded research in public universities, the University of Utah is the state’s flagship institution with more than 28,000 students and 2,750 faculty members. The University is home to 15 colleges including Business, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. The University of Utah includes a preeminent medical research and treatment center known for its advances in genetics, cancer treatment, eye treatment, and artificial organ development.
Total research funding in 2003 leads the eight-state Intermountain West with $287 million.

The Marriott Library serves education, research, and inquiry by providing the resources, means, and expertise for scholars of today and of the future to discover, gather, use, and create knowledge. The Marriott Library is the hub of the University of Utah campus, the central axis around which the scholarly and social lives of students, faculty, and the community are encouraged to develop and flourish.
The Marriott Library is uniquely equipped to meet the needs of the twenty-first century library user. In the midst of a rapid transformation of research and scholarship, the Marriott Library continues to embrace not only technology, but the tradition of the book as well. We span the whole spectrum of knowledge—from papyrus scrolls to digital files.
Within the Marriott Library, the old and the new blend and reinforce each other. Digital technologies continue to improve access exponentially. Yet, we equally value the knowledge and information created over millennia. Special collections hold unique and eclectic resources that are used in person and accessed through the Internet. The Red Butte Press produces limited-edition jewels on a hand-operated antique 1846 Columbian press, while the University of Utah Press continues to publish vital new scholarship. People use books alongside computers. Electronic journals, visual and media resources, preservation microfilm, repositories to share and preserve the digital assets of the scholarly community—all these resources are at the Marriott Library.
Today, a single library can reach the entire world. And the Marriott Library has become an innovative leader in developing initiatives that have a global impact, while still maintaining focus on our local users. We teach students the skills needed to be lifetime learners. We assist faculty to apply the newest technologies in their teaching. We welcome local, regional, and national communities to make use of Library resources. We provide services day or night within the building, over the phone, through pod casts and via the Internet.
The J. Willard Marriott Library has developed service principals to serve the community of the University of Utah and the community at large:
- Treat everyone with dignity and respect
- Be welcoming and professional
- Strive to be knowledgeable about your work
- Listen to understand
- Accept all questions and requests as valid
- Honor differences and diversity
- Find the best available strategy or solution for meeting user needs
- Support each other in providing service
- Eliminate unnecessary barriers to service
- Resolve mistakes and problems without blame
- Take responsibility for follow through
- Create a teaching and learning environment
ARTIST SELECTION COMMITTEE STATEMENT
The remodeled Library structure will be an updated version of the original 1960s architecture and furnishings. When renovation is completed in June 2008, the Marriott Library will be framed in glass, embedded with technology, staffed by experts, and filled with collections from the ages.
The future Marriott Library will be the jewel of the campus, a vibrant and enduring sanctuary where students, faculty, and community will gather to celebrate learning, the sharing of ideas, and the development of knowledge. It will foster the integration of campus and community intellectual, cultural and social life through stewardship of its traditional resources, as well as its innovative vision and application of cutting-edge technologies.
Areas identified by the committee as potential public art sites are the main atrium, the grand staircase and staircase lobby at each level as well as the large walls on floors 4 and 5 facing the open atrium space (the 4th floor foyer is reserved for Special Collections.) The committee is open to other suggested sites, however there is a certain amount of uncertainty as to the future disposition of the large exterior spaces outside the library.
The committee and the project require incorporated art of high aesthetic that is timeless, exciting, and exceptional. We desire a bold statement that illustrates the continuum of learned scholarship coupled with high technology.
The committee is open to considering the work(s) of one artist, multiple artists or multiple works by an artist or team of artists.
