2011 Statewide Annual Competition

 

Visual arts competitions and exhibitions have been a project of the state since 1899, providing juried exhibitions open to all Utah artists over the age of 18.

The theme rotates between Mixed Media and Works on Paper, Crafts and Photography and Painting and Sculpture. Works are chosen for display by two out of state artists or arts professionals who travel to the Rio Gallery to jury the exhibit in person.

Submissions for 2012: Crafts & Photography will be accepted in September (exact dates TBA)

Each Fall, an exhibition of the Statewide Annual Competition winners is shown at the Rio Gallery.

2011 Jurors

Ivar Zeile: Denver, CO

Ivar Zeile is owner and director of Plus Gallery, one of Denver's most reputable programs for contemporary art. Since 2006, Zeile has been a member of the Denver Mayor's Commission for Cultural Affairs and has served as a board member for numerous organizations including  PlatteForum, the Denver Art Museum's DAM Contemporaries, and Redline. In 2009 Zeile was appointed Creative Director for the Denver Theatre District's Outdoor Art Gallery and continues to develop this program, enhancing the presence of the visual arts in downtown Denver. Zeile has also worked in various visual arts realms as well as film, video and a variety of diverse design platforms. 

Julia Latane: Los Angeles, CA

Julia Latané has been making sculpture and drawings for the past 20 years and exhibits her work nationally and internationally, showing in various galleries and museums, including the Oakland Museum of California, Diverse Works in Houston, and the Tucson Museum of Art, where her work is part of the permanent collection. She is currently Head Preparator at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. Ms. Latané is Co-Founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson, Arizona where she has curated several exhibitions and served as Board President from 1997 until 2001. She is passionate about making art and building communities where others can make and exhibit their work.
