Statewide Annual Competitions

Visual arts competitions and exhibitions have been a project of the state since 1899, providing juried exhibitions open to all Utah artists and a forum from which the Permanent Collection Committee can make acquisition recommendations.

This competition and exhibition is open to all Utah artists over the age of 18. The jurors prefer to see the works in person, but if you are unable to deliver your pieces to the host gallery, up to three slides may be submitted and sent to the Utah Arts Council.

Exhibitions

Each Fall, an exhibition of the Statewide Annual Competition winners is shown at the Rio Gallery.

2009 Jurors

Regina Benson

Regina Benson is an artist working in the textile medium creating wall hangings and dimensional textile sculptures using her own surface designed cloth. Lithuanian born and living in Colorado, Regina has lectured on the trends of textile surface design and has served as juror and guest curator for fiber and crafts exhibits.  She uses her painterly cloth to incorporate allusions to her subjects’ aspects, inviting the viewer to share the visual and physical space. Benson’s textile installations have been recently added to the permanent art collections of several museums, municipalities and Universities.

Pete Grady

Pete Grady began his career in photography in 1973 photographing live theater events and performer portfolios in the Los Angeles area. He has worked as a photographic technician at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA during the Viking Mars Mission. Grady’s most recent work explores landscape themes going beyond describing a place to more formal issues of space, color and line. Pete holds a BFA from Boise State University with an emphasis in drawing and has participated in photographic workshops with Edmund Teske, Cole Weston, John Sexton, Roger Minick, Victor Landweber and Ralph Talbert.
