Molded in the tradition of other great vocal groups such as Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices, 6 Miles Ahead has garnered excitement and respect in Utah’s jazz community. The jazz choir is comprised of the best vocal talent across the Wasatch front. They perform music arranged for 4-6 part mixed voices with rhythm section accompaniment and some a cappella. Though emphasis is placed on jazz standards, the group performs a wide range of musical styles from jazz blues, funk, and Latin, to Bach, and the Beatles.
6 Miles Ahead was formed in 2002 by founding member Kristie Arnold, former director of BYU’s premier jazz choir. Within 6 months of its creation, 6 Miles Ahead was recognized with a first place finish at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. Following its finish at Moscow, the group appeared at the Western Regional International Association of Jazz Education Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Other performances have followed including The Crescent Jazz Festival, the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival, and The Park City International Jazz Festival.
Meticulous and dead serious in their pursuit of vocal excellence, 6 Miles Ahead will leave audiences teeming with energy and bursting with melody.
