Mom said, “You were born with your mouth open, and it’s been open ever since!” School report cards said, “Elaine is a wonderful student, but she talks too much.” Her husband and children said after every performance, “Quit talking to people and let’s go!” What does all this add up to? A person who loves to tell stories!
Weaving music with stories, Elaine tells all kinds of stories from her own and others’ heritage: fairy tales, Celtic tales, pioneer stories, family stories, and now ‘aging’ stories. She plays the hammered dulcimer, harp, concertina and drums. She is a rare combination of Metropolitan-Opera-state-winner with folk-musician-teacher-and-teller. This gives her an appeal on many levels — to people of many different walks of life and cultures, and to old as well as young.
Sometimes, with a little luck, you might get one or two of her children, experienced from sixteen years of performing throughout the western states with The Brewster Family, to come with her. Usually these days, though, she goes solo; that’s what empty-nesting does for a person. But then, there’s more of her for you!
