(Dance)

To dance is to experience and celebrate a deep and dynamic sense of self. Kathie Debenham believes expressive movement is the birthright of every human being and as such is an essential element of education. Young children are by nature movers. Movement is their first language and is the way they begin to define a sense of themselves, the world, and themselves in relationship to the world. Artist educators have the unique opportunity and responsibility to provide learning experiences in dance that not only enhance their learning/knowing potentials but also, and equally importantly, bring them a sense of joy and satisfaction through personal expression.

Kathie often reminds the students they are in charge of their own learning and can "be their own best teacher" as they explore and shape and form their ideas into movement. Students relish the chance to develop their mind-body skills in mentally and physically challenging yet enjoyable ways.? Kathie has found that often the students are surprised and delighted that a "grown up" is willing to enter into their childlike and exuberantly physical world. This can add greatly to the positive atmosphere in the classroom and help make the classroom community a friendly and welcoming place to be.

Best availability in May; other times possible when the location is near Utah County. Requires a CD/cassette player and a clean open space, preferably with a wood floor.

Available for residencies, teacher training, collaborations with other artists, and short-term activities.
