Salvador Reyes, a Mexican Folk Dancer, has done residencies and performed throughout the State of Utah for 20 years. Salvador has worked for the Utah Arts Council and the Utah State Office of Education since 1980. He has also worked as an Artist in Residence in Alaska and Idaho. Salvador has been the director of the Ballet Folkloric Quetzacoatl, specializing in pre-Hispanic dances since 1979.
Salvador believes one of the purposes of his residencies is to work in communities and create a positive understanding of the Mexican culture. Children are not limited in any way because each child is able to participate to the best of his/her ability. Each child can feel successful and the final program shares that result with the school, family and community. Salvador believes that Mexican dance, songs and language can be integrated into many areas of study. Salvador is very flexible and willing to provide additional resources. He not only teaches the dances, but includes information on the history, geographic origin, customs, traditions and costumes of the various dances. He also includes information about the history of Mexico and what it is like today.
For his residencies, Salvador needs a large room like a gym or multipurpose room, a tape recorder or stereo and access to a photocopy machine to make limited copies of the songs that are taught. A supply fee of $200 is required, as he makes all of his own costumes and provides the cleaning and repair of those costumes.
Available for residencies, teacher training, extended projects, collaborations with other artists, and short-term activities.
