Important General Links

Arts Education Partnership (AEP) is a national coalition of arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that demonstrate and promote the essential role of the arts in the learning and development of every child and in the improvement of America's schools.

Arts for Learning provides compelling examples of arts programs, resources, and discussions that can support and animate teaching and learning.

Kennedy Center-Arts Edge offers free, standards-based teaching materials for use in and out of the classroom, as well as professional development resources, student materials, and guidelines for arts-based instruction and assessment.

National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) is a membership organization of the nation's state and jurisdictional arts agencies. NASAA's mission is to provide member agencies with the information, resources and representation they require to engage issues proactively and serve the public effectively.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts--both new and established--bringing the arts to all Americans, and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Endowment is the nation's largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.


ArtsPartners

The Utah Arts Council's Arts Education (AE) Program maintains partnerships with arts education organizations in the state to develop and encourage arts education. With the Utah State Office of Education's Fine Arts Division, including its Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPS), AE works to develop arts programming in Utah schools through the Arts Education Grant Program. A partnership with the Equity Division of the Utah State Office of Education helps to support and promote ethnic artists with one-day residencies and short performances in Utah schools. A partnership with the Utah Alliance for Arts and Humanities fosters networking, technical assistance, advocacy and the development of symposia to address philosophical and pragmatic issues faced by arts educators in public and private schools, colleges and universities.

Partnerships also include professional artistic organizations, Utah PTA, Art Access/Very Special Arts and other agencies. AE and its partners offer conferences, workshops, and inservice opportunities for teachers; provide program support for professional arts education organizations; and assist in the production of educational materials.

Art Access/VSA arts of Utah logo Art Access/VSA arts of Utah, a state affiliate of VSAarts, serves 17,000 Utahns annually. Art Access provides arts programming and experiences for the underserved, including children and adults with disabilities. They promote the abilities of all persons through the positive and healing power of the arts. Programming ranges from the New Visions Dance Project, a collaboration with CDT, to PARTNERS: A Visual Artist Mentoring program. In partnership with USOE Special Education Services Unit, Art Access provides festivals, artist residencies, and workshops for teachers and students. In partnership with UAC, Art Access pairs artists and teachers in collaborations to share their expertise and develop adaptive arts techniques for students with special needs, along with many other initiatives. Art Access also offers a gallery in which they promote the work of new, emerging artists both those disabled and underserved.

Children's Dance Theater logoChildren's Dance Theatre (CDT) is the performing arm of the University of Utah Virginia Tanner Creative Dance Program. This company of young dancers, ages eight to eighteen, shares its performances annually with more than 45,000 Utahns. In February 2000, a major goal was realized when the program became a part of the University's Department of Modern Dance in the College of Fine Arts. Programs include: Studio Classes, Fine Arts Preschool, Teacher Workshops, Special Populations Classes, Outreach Services, Side-by-Side School, and Residencies.

Repertory Dance Theatre logoRepertory Dance Theatre is both a museum and contemporary gallery representing the scope and diversity of modern dance past and present. Known worldwide for its collection of dance treasures from early pioneers of the art form to cutting edge modern choreography, RDT strives to broaden public understanding of the art of modern dance through a variety of community-based programs. RDT acts as a resource center and laboratory for dancers, choreographers, visual artists, writers and composers. In addition to season performances, the company offers annual summer workshops and year-round classes to train aspiring professionals and to inspire the creative potential in people of all ages.

Ririe Woodbury Dance Company logoRirie Woodbury Dance Company is recognized as a successful modern dance company combining formal performances and community residencies. Ririe-Woodbury is known for its tremendous work in the education system of Utah. Step Lively is a statewide program designed to assist classroom teachers in meeting the objectives of the Utah Fine Arts Core Curriculum. Ririe-Woodbury has pioneered dance education in Utah and throughout the United States.

Springville Museum of Art logoSpringville Museum of Art is Utah's oldest museum for the visual fine arts. Selections from the museum's noted collection of over 1,500 works of Utah and American art are shown on the second floor. The education program hosts more than 16,000 elementary, secondary, and college students each year. Docents have been specially trained to work with student groups, clubs, organizations, and families. The education program sponsors Evening for Educators, StateWide Art Partnerships, lesson plans for teachers, art posters for schools, an all-state high school show, and web links for teachers.

UAEA logoUtah Art Education Association (UAEA), a state affiliate of the National Art Education Association, enhances, encourages, and enriches quality visual art education in the state of Utah. UAEA holds an Annual Conference, Autumn Art Retreat and Summer Workshop for art educators from every level of instruction (e.g., early childhood, elementary, intermediate, secondary, college and university, administration, museum education, lifelong learning.)

Utah Dance Education Organization logoUtah Dance Education Organization (UDEO) is a newly created state organization affiliated with the National Dance Education Organization that has a primary focus of benefiting the dance community in Utah. UDEO is dedicated to the art form of dance as an essential educational component of life-long learning. Their primary goals of the organization include: developing a membership, improving the quality and training of dance education in Utah, and building and supporting a Utah dance community that focuses on the education of the whole person.

Utah Symphony and Opera logoUtah Symphony & Opera strives to live up to its name in serving all the people of Utah, regardless of age and geographic location. Each year, the Opera company performs for over 80,000 students in Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre and in schools throughout Utah. This amounts to approximately 10% of all school opera audiences nationwide, according to annual surveys by OPERA America. Not only are these young people developing a greater appreciation of opera and the multitude of art forms that comprises it, but they will also ensure Utah Opera's audience base in the years to come. Young people and adults alike enjoy opera more when they understand the lyrics.

Utah PTA logoUtah Parent Teacher Association's goal is to help evey child reach their full potential. Their site includes a resource library, current calendar, parenting tips, Reflections rules, legislative updates, and information on obtaining a copy of Utah PTA Perspectives, the official newsletter of the Utah PTA. Utah State Office of Education logoUtah State Office of Education Fine Arts Division (USOE)'s goals and objectives for arts education are supported and encouraged by administering an arts education scholarship program; coordinating and guiding the work of professional artistic companies in the schools; working with higher education, professional education associations, district teachers and administrators; and other state arts agencies. USOE works to improve development, develops instructional/pedagogical materials, sponsors and promotes professional development conferences, workshops, and retreats, and informs others about opportunities and resources.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 includes in almost every section of the law- support and assistance for "core academic subjects." Federal Cultural Funding Opportunities: A National Endowment for the Arts online resource of Federal funding available for arts initiatives through national, state and local funding programs. Search for programs similar to yours to see how they accessed federal dollars for arts and cultural programs. Each main category will lead you to examples of programs and the trail that was used to access the federal money at a local level.

The Cultural Partnerships for At-Risk Children and Youth Program, authorized under Title V of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by Public Law, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 supports school-community partnership programs designed to improve the educational performance of at-risk children by providing arts education services and programs, especially programs incorporating arts education standards. Applications Available: June. Deadline for Applications: July. Available funds: Approximately $4,000,000. Average Size of Awards: $300,000. Project Period: up to 36 months. National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) is the voice of representation for the field in legislatures, schools of dance, PreK-12 schools, and institutions of higher education throughout the country. The NDEO holds public discussions, sponsors institutes, workshops, conferences and programs. They develop guidelines, promote standards, and design curricula. The NDEO is the national affiliate of the Utah Dance Education Organization.

National Dance Association's (NDA) mission is to increase knowledge, improve skills, and encourage sound professional practices in dance education while promoting and supporting creative and healthy lifestyles through high quality dance programs.

Film/Video

Bravo is a film and arts network offering critically acclaimed American and international films and performing arts, including dance, theatre, classical music and jazz.

Coalition for Quality Children's Media (KIDS FIRST) The KIDS FIRST seal of approval is awarded titles that meet or exceed baseline criteria including: no gratuitous violence or sexual behavior; no physical or verbal abuse; no racial, gender, cultural or religious bias; no condescension toward children; no unsafe behavior - and - are approved by both the adult and the child jurors.

General Education

Disney Learning Partnership supports creative teaching strategies and engaging approaches to learning. The Teacher Center has free lesson plans, workshops and examples of outstanding student projects as well as advice from master teachers. Literary Arts

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have provided an avenue for young artists and writers, in grades 7-12, to receive recognition and rewards for their creative achievements. Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) is a vital resource for the performing arts community. Membership ranges from large performing arts centers in major urban centers, to small presenters in rural communities, and include artists, artists' managers, and other performing arts professionals.

Kennedy Center's Arts Edge featuring Newsbreak, a daily update on what's happening in the arts and education, teaching materials and professional resources.

Connect for Kids links to arts education articles and resources, including those covering issues like developing community arts education partnerships and arts programming for at-risk youth.

Arizona Arts Education Resource Center Arts work Teaching the Arts Instruction find K-12 arts education materials for visual arts, dance, music and drama/theatre are provided through the Arizona Arts Education Resource Center (AAERC), a dynamic, web-based resource designed for use by teachers, students and their parents. Teachers can find information on standards, curriculum, instruction and assessment for arts education, as well as lists of arts resources, arts organizations and arts advocacy groups. New Horizons for Learning is a nonprofit organization with articles that provides convincing evidence of the value of learning through the arts. Education at The Met is a department of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, offers an innovative network of programs designed to help further music and arts education in schools and communities across the world. National Very Special Arts (VSAarts) is an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and an international organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities. The organization offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and the visual arts implemented primarily through their vast affiliate network in 39 states and the District of Columbia, collaborators in 10 states, and 70 international affiliates in 67 countries. President's Committee for the Arts and the Humanities works to encourage private sector support for the arts and humanities and public appreciation of their value through projects, publications and meetings. Access a number of arts education reports, publications, and brochures such as "Why You Child Needs the Arts Advantage and How to Gain It" and "Coming Up Taller".

American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has a membership association of over 110,000 composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. ASCAP's function is to protect the rights of its members by licensing and paying royalties for the public performances of their copyrighted works.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts (Kennedy Center) is committed to increasing opportunities for all people to participate in and understand the arts. Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nationwide organization composed of officials who head departments of education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity and five extra-state jurisdictions. This organization works closely with several national arts education assessment efforts and with the Goals 2000 Arts Education Partnership.

Americans for the Arts is a national organization of groups and individuals dedicated to advancing arts and culture in communities across the country. The organization strives to make the arts more accessible to every child and adult in America.

National Parent Teacher Association (National PTA) is the oldest and largest volunteer association in the U.S. working exclusively on behalf of children and youth. The mission of the National PTA is to speak on behalf of children and youth, assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children and to encourage parent and public involvement in the nation?s public schools. National PTA is the national affiliate of the Utah PTA.

Music

Chamber Music America (CMA) promotes artistic excellence and economic stability within the profession, and to ensure chamber music as a part of American life. CMA's primary constituents are professional chamber ensemble members, concert presenters, festivals and training institutions, business members, and individual members including independent professional, student, and amateur musicians.

Thelonious Monk Institute The National Jazz Curriculum is available free on this web site featuring an 11th grade curriculum, tune snippets, visual images, and jazz resources. An 8th and 5th grade curricula will be available soon.

American Music Conference (AMC) promotes the benefits of music, music making and music education with topics such as: the brain, wellness, schools, public policy, technology, history and philanthropy.

American Music Therapy Association's mission is to advance public awareness of the benefits of music therapy and increase access to quality music therapy services in a rapidly changing world. Music therapy is the prescribed use of music by a qualified person to effect positive changes in the psychological, physical, cognitive, or social functioning of individuals with health or educational problems.

International Foundation for Music Research's goals are to promote and fund research in the broad field of music and behavior including cognitive science, psychology, education, neuroscience, medicine, health, therapy, child development, adolescence, aging and allied disciplines. The foundation supports basic and applied research through three programs: 1).the conduct of research projects, 2). prizes for outstanding research and 3). graduate fellowships and research funding.

The National Music Council acts as a clearing house for the joint opinion and decision of its members and is dedicated to strengthening the importance of music in our life and culture. The Council provides member organizations with a forum for the free discussion of problems affecting national musical life in this country; provides for the interchange of information between the various member oganizations; encourages the coordination of efforts of the member organizations; and organizes exploratory surveys or fact-finding commissions.

American Orff-Schulwerk Association Orff-Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music. It is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making music first, then reading and writing it later. This is the same way we all learned our language.

National Association for Music Education (MENC) offers resources for the classroom and research, along with updates on new curriculums, products and networking opportunites. The mission is to advance music education as a profession and to ensure that American children have music as a core subject of study. MENC is the national affiliate of the Utah Music Educators Association.

Theatre

American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) The mission of the AATE is to promote standards of excellence in theatre and drama/theatre education by providing the theatre artists and the theatre educator a network of resources and support, a base for advocacy, and access to programs and projects that focus on the importance of drama in the human experience.

Educational Theatre Association (ETA) provided theatre festivals for students, professional development programs for theatre teachers, a magazine, a quarterly journal, and much more.

Therapy

VSAarts Founded in 1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith as an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, VSA arts is an International organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities. The organization offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and the visual arts implemented primarily through our vast affiliate network in 39 states and the District of Columbia, collaborators in 10 states, and 70 international affiliates in 67 countries. VSA arts' programs now serve 4.3 million Americans and 1.3 million people in other parts of the world. VSAarts is the national affiliate of VSA.

American Art Therapy Association The American Art Therapy Association, Inc. (AATA) is an organization of professionals dedicated to the belief that the creative process involved in the making of art is healing and life enhancing. Its mission is to serve its members and the general public by providing standards of professional competence, and developing and promoting knowledge in, and of, the field of art therapy.

National Coalitions of Art Therapies Associations (NCCATA) founded in 1979, is an alliance of professional associations dedicated to the advancement of the arts as therapeutic modalities. NCCATA represents over 8000 individual members of six creative arts therapies associations.

Visual Arts

International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) has endeavored to create a common bond among the world's children through the arts. ICAF is the nation's child art and creativity organization. We also serve as umbrella for an expanding international network of professionals and learning institutions. Internet School Library Media Center is a meta-site for teachers, librarians, parents, artists, and students. Museum of Web Art (MOWA for Kids) Drag your mouse over squares to paint, make a millipede longer and watch it follow you, or move your mouse over splashing water to change the pattern.

MuseumLink's Museum of Museums will eventually contain links to every museum on the planet, from the world's largest to the most obscure (assuming they have a website). See the very beginning of this effort at U.S. Museums by State or the newly started Canadian Museums.

University of Southern California's Interactive Art Museum at Fisher Gallery The goal of the project is to develop an Interactive Art Museum on the World Wide Web, housed at the Fisher Gallery, USC's own accredited art museum. Drawing on the resources of USC's faculty in engineering, communication and museum studies, we are developing an online museum, with neither walls nor guards, globally accessible 24 hours a day. Visitors to the art museum will be able to view two-dimensional images and utilize remote telerobotic devices equipped with video cameras to view three-dimensional works and participate interactively, in real time, in art performances and installations. New techniques in 3D modeling, haptic interfacing, and augmented reality will permit onsite and remote inspection and manipulation of three-dimensional museum objects.

The MARS Millennium Project is an official White House Millennium Council Youth Initiative that challenges students across the nation to design a community yet to be imagined--for the planet Mars. Visit the virtual gallery, download a lesson plan, and go to mission control.

National Gallery of Art Be sure to check out their kids site which features stories, activities, and information on the Gallery's collections, and an animated musical tale called Lizzy and Gordon Visit the Sculpture Garden.
