Work by Nolan Flynn and Mitchell Lee
JUNE 13 – AUGUST 31, 2018
postmodernposh is a response to the #mainstream art scene where the art world has become more consumer-based and art is seen more as a luxury than anything else. Nolan Flynn and Mitchell Lee, the two #artists in this exhibition both carry approaches in their #artwork that antagonize this idea of #art.
Nolan Flynn’s #abstract #paintings are created one mark at a time, with each mark a reaction to the last. Flynn creates intrigue in his work by building up and removing layers of #paint with classical methods of oil paint additions, and atypical paint masking methods. Each layer has a different application, in many ways painting with no plan embracing the unknown which becomes interlinked within the framework. His creation process derails his audience making it almost impossible to track how each #painting was made. This method questions the seriousness of #painting while promoting a playful nature.
Mitchell Lee’s #portraits question the value of significance. He acknowledges the concepts of immortality and flattery that are associated with #classicalportraiture and challenges those ideas by creating #work on non-pristine #painting surfaces made from found-objects.
Flynn’s playful #abstractpaintings oppose Lee’s labored #portraits, but the two have collaboratively #curated a collection of their own work both in two and three-dimensional space with a thoughtful installation practice. The provided work challenges the transition away from the typical, white-cube gallery space, and the hierarchy of the #artworld with a #concurrent critique of the #mainstream #artscene.
