In partnership with the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project, four students from Whitehorse High School in Montezuma Creek, UT were given the opportunity to work with two classical music composers. Over four days students participated in music workshops and received one-on-one instruction from the artists. Within the workshops students composed their own musical scores and learned musical collaboration and rehearsal skills. Concluding the workshop, the student’s pieces were performed at the Grand Canyon Music Festival. As part of grant funding, students traveled to the Grand Canyon Music Festival to see the premiere of their work.
Additionally, the grant supported students from Whitehorse High School, San Juan High School, Monticello High School and Albert R. Lyman Middle School to engage in a raku ceramics workshop. Artist Lee Burningham (ceramics) led the students through traditional Japanese raku methods, glazing techniques, and kiln firing. History, art, and culture were combined to give students a well-rounded creative experience.
