Visual Arts Fellowships Open

Each year, we award two $10,000 fellowships to individual visual artists to acknowledge their artistic excellence and encourage their careers. Artists practicing in a variety of media – such as painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, craft, and new genres – are eligible. Fellowship awards do not require matching funds.

Applying artists must demonstrate professionalism in their practice through quality images and documentation. Artists must be Utah residents not enrolled in a degree- or certificate-granting program. Application is open through January 31. Here are some helpful tips:

What we’re looking for:Why it matters:
Read the directions carefully
Full guidelines are available on the website.
Applicants can be disqualified without notice if guidelines are not followed or if applications are incomplete.
Double-check eligibility requirements
Applicants should meet ALL the eligibility requirements to qualify for the fellowship.
This year there are new requirements and restrictions for age, residency, re-application of previous fellows, etc.
Be familiar with the juror
Read the juror’s bio and look over their website, organization, artwork, CV, etc.
It’s important to know who will be looking over each application/who is the audience.
Be thoughtful about choosing work samples for the application
Works chosen should highlight the artist’s career over the last 5 years.
This is the chance for applicants to demonstrate why now is the time in their career for this award. Samples can show the artist’s unique perspective, mastery of artistic skill and techniques, and overall professional practice.
Submit high-quality/high-resolution images
Double-check image specifications and requirements in the application.

Work samples are the most important part of the application. Photos can include installation images, artwork details, etc.
Include a strong artist statement
This is not a biography or explanation of a single body of work. An artist’s statement should be a supplemental guide to enhance and give context to the chosen artworks. Here are links with some helpful advice on writing an artist statement:

The artist’s statement is a crucial component that is often overlooked by applicants. It is the artist’s chance to interact with the juror. A strong statement allows the juror to better understand, experience, and appreciate the chosen work samples.
Attach an updated CV
Double-check to make sure everything is current and include any upcoming projects, exhibitions, etc.
This is the applicant’s chance to show their commitment to Utah’s artistic community and professional activity in the field of visual arts.

Submit early
Submitting before the deadline allows applicants time to ask questions, troubleshoot technical difficulties, etc.
Late or incomplete applications are not accepted for any reason.
